Peyote ceremonies have long been held as a way to restore the balance between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual realms. Outside of its historically sacred context, peyote holds promise for more general personal growth and development. With increasing experience, there is a growing opinion that HCT should be initiated early in the disease process. However, the actual timing of HCT is still a source of debate among experts.

“There are two species or types of peyote”

First and foremost, you want to feel safe at the center that you choose, both physically and emotionally/energetically. If you can’t relax because you feel on edge, you won’t be able to open to the medicine’s healing qualities. Because this plant medicine doesn’t distort our senses as intensely, or so we trick ourselves into believing, as Ayahuasca, Kambo, San Pedro, Iboga, Mushrooms, or other Medicines, many dismiss the power of rapeh. After administering the medicine to all participants, the ceremony will typically close with a final prayer or chant.

Participants are often encouraged to take time for reflection and integration following the ceremony, as the effects of the medicine can continue to be felt for some time afterward. Once the intention has been set, the rapeh is prepared and administered by the practitioner or shaman. Participants will take turns receiving the medicine, which is blown into the nostrils using a pipe or straw. The practitioner may also use other tools, such as smudging, feathers, or crystals, to help clear and balance the energy of the individual receiving the medicine. That said, if you trust the person serving you, the experience is powerful and oftentimes transformational, even if the transformations are subtle rather than immediately pronounced.

Although T-cell CAEBV has more often been reported in children and adolescents,6 the disease has more recently been reported in adults.7 The disease in adults seems to be more aggressive and progresses more rapidly than in children. The disease may have an insidious or acute fulminant course and is difficult to treat once organ dysfunction, especially hepatic insufficiency, occurs. Some patients have high levels of EBV in T cells in the blood and disease localized to the skin in the absence of systemic symptoms, termed EBV hydroa vacciniforme, and the course may be indolent. Regardless of decriminalization, the renewed interest in plant medicines more generally has created a demand—and market—for peyote ceremonies that take place outside of the context and long history of indigenous traditions.

There is active medical research into the peptides found in the skin secretions of Phyllomedusa bicolor, focusing on discovering their biological effects. There have been some preclinical trials in mice and rats, but no phase-1 tests or clinical trials of safety in humans, as of November 2019.

In the Native American Church, peyote ceremonies are often used to treat drug and alcohol addiction. And, tellingly, while alcoholism among the Navajo and other Native American tribes is often said to be more than twice the national US average, it tends to be especially low among members of the Native American Church. Whether peyote therefore represents a promising therapy for alcohol addiction is up for debate, but these findings are supported by anecdotal reports as well as studies into the therapeutic benefits of other psychedelics. Indeed, even William “Bill W” Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, was in favor of psychedelic intervention.
